As-Built Structural Investigation on early 1900’s Concrete Building in Downtown L.A.

No as-built drawings were available for the design engineer to seismic retrofit this early 1900’s 3-story concrete building located in downtown Los Angeles.  CAE performed non-destructive testing to provide the structural as-built for the concrete framing members (beams and columns) and concrete slab using the Ground Penetrating Radar and selective demolition to provide construction of the framing members and slab, including details of the members’ reinforcement.

Testing Performed on 1940’s Historic Building

Structural Investigation and Material Testing performed on a 1940s historic building

p-13

Scanning the structural element with the GPR to determine the presence and layout of steel reinforcement.

Test area containment for dust control during light demolition on a column investigation for steel reinforcement size determination.  Area containment typically required for occupied building during the the work.

Minimal light demolition to mitigate structural disturbance to the element and the size of reinforcement as required by the testing program.

Concrete sampling for determination of in-situ compressive strength per ASTM C42 as required by the testing program.

p-17

Structural repair to all test sampling and light selective demolition locations.  Surface finishing close to original condition can be accomplished, if requested.
